Four Simple Secrets to Classic Spaghetti Sauce

Classic spaghetti sauce is a magical thing. And in a time of uncertainty, there’s something to be said for spending some time making something wholesome and hearty and comforting in the kitchen. We aren’t giving away our La Famiglia recipe, but we will share four simple secrets to classic spaghetti sauce.

Start with Fresh Ingredients

Canned tomatoes may be easy, but there’s no substitute for fresh tomatoes. Our recommendations are Roma or San Marzano tomatoes. They’re chock-full of vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. Boil the tomatoes for five minutes, then allow to cool. Remove the skins and mash well to remove any seeds. Make sure to factor for this time when you plan your sauce, then follow your recipe as written.

Use Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Fresh extra virgin olive oil brings a bright, fresh quality to your sauce. But reaching for fresh extra virgin oil doesn’t just mean a flavor boost – you’re also gettin all the benefits of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, plus reduced saturated fat.

Go Wild on the Veggies

Tomato sauce is a versatile dish, and you can pack in some flavor and nutrition with a few veggies. In addition to onion and garlic, plus herbs like basil and parley, think zucchini, shredded carrots, and mushrooms. Mushrooms and black olives are both classic additions that add bulk and flavor for a meat-free alternative

No Sugar Necessary

Skip the sugar – if you’re starting with sweet, fresh tomatoes, you won’t need it! Plus, those fresh herbs have their own sweetness, so don’t forget the basil.
